8/22/2007 - Beware of Staging

Looking to buy a home? Watch out for what we in the market call “staging.” Some sellers will do anything to sell their homes; even if that means being dishonest. A few things to pay close attention to are sellers pulling the proverbial rug over stained floors, and covering rotting windows with curtains.  The main goal of the seller is to get the buyer emotionally involved with the property. Some other small details to watch out for  could be really small furniture to make rooms look much larger than they are. The president of the National Association of Exclusive Buyers Agents, Jon Boyd, states that 82 percent of brokers and realtors surveyed by the association state that buyers get distracted by “staging.” This in turn means buyers might make decisions they may not normally make had they been informed buyers. So if you are in the market for a home, make sure you don’t just look at what meets the eye!
